We often ask friends or family, “Are we good?” It’s a way to check if there’s peace in the relationship. But have you ever asked that question of God? “God, are we good?”

It’s a question that defines everything about our lives and eternity. Many people assume they are right with God based on their morality, religious background, or good deeds. But the Bible offers a different answer—one that is both humbling and full of hope.

1. You Are Not Made Right by Comparison to Others

One of the biggest misconceptions is that being better than others makes us right with God. It’s easy to point at others and think, “At least I’m not as bad as them.” But Romans 2:1 warns, “At whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.”

The truth is, no one meets God’s perfect standard. We all fall short. Trying to justify ourselves by pointing out others’ failures doesn’t change our own sin.

2. You Are Not Made Right by Knowledge of the Law

Many believe that knowing about God, attending church, or following religious rituals makes them right with Him. But Romans 2:13 says, “For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but those who obey the law.”

It’s not enough to simply know what is right—we must live it out perfectly and none of us do. We all fail to live up to God’s standards. Which is why, knowledge alone cannot save us.

3. You Are Made Right by Faith in Jesus

If we can’t be made right with God by comparison or religious effort, then how can we? Romans 2:29 points to the answer: “A person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit.”

True righteousness is not something we achieve but something God does for us. When we place our faith in Jesus, He transforms our hearts. He took the punishment for our sin so that we could be forgiven. Our standing with God is not based on our performance, but on Christ’s sacrifice.

The Invitation: Come to Jesus

No matter your past, your religious background, or your struggles, the invitation is the same: Come to Jesus. Admit that you can’t be right with God on your own. Trust in His grace, and let Him give you a new heart.

If you’ve been relying on comparison or religious knowledge, it’s time to trade that for real faith. The good news? God is ready to welcome you with open arms.
